Mníšek lies about six kilometres north-north-west of Liberec. The municipality is at the foot of the Jizera Mountains.

Mníšek is first mentioned in the 1381 urbarium of the Frýdlant estate. The Baroque Church of St Nicholas in Mníšek replaced the original small church dating from 1570. Its foundation stone was laid on 3 June 1739.
